Northwestern Memorial Hospital Wellness Institute offers a comprehensive Smoking Cessation Program. Carol Southard, Northwestern's Smoking Cessation Program provides eight weekly group sessions. It includes a comprehensive support group combined with individualized interventions. The foundation of the program is a strong focus on stopping smoking using a behavioral approach. Information about nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix) is also part of the program. Prescriptions and referrals are provided when appropriate. Sessions include:
Follow up phone calls are made to clients at three and twelve month intervals. This program has a success rate ranging from 46 to 53 percent, four times higher than the national average.
