The Lurie Cancer Center's Cancer Genetics Program offers cancer risk assessment to patients whose family history may put them at increased risk for cancer, and their health care providers. It is important to identify families with a hereditary susceptibility to cancer because in many cases they can take steps to reduce their own risk and the risk of family members, or prevent cancer from occurring in the first place.
Only about 5-10% of cancer is hereditary. You are more likely to have a hereditary cause to the cancer in your family if:

  • More than one family member has the same or related types of cancer
  • A family member was diagnosed with cancer at an early age
  • A family member has had cancer twice (such as bilateral primary breast cancers)
  • More than one generation in the family is affected by the same or related cancers
  • A family member has other features of a hereditary cancer condition and/or you are a member of an at-risk ethnic group (such as Ashkenazi Jewish)
The Cancer Genetics Program is headed by oncologist, Virginia Kaklamani, MD, DSc. To make an appointment or refer a patient for a cancer genetic evaluation, please contact the Lurie Cancer Center's Cancer Genetics Program at 312.695.0990.
